Frequently Asked Questions
A floor should be cleaned & recoated when wear patterns start to develop in traffic areas.
A floor should be sanded & refinished when the protective finish is broken down, texture & color changes appear in traffic areas, or when damage has been done due to a sudden change in moisture or other damage has occurred.
Yes, most floors can be saved. There are different options to get your floor looking beautiful again:
- Clean and Recoat
- Sand and Seal
- Repair, Sand and Seal
- Remove, reinstall adding reclaimed flooring to match, sand and seal
- Carver's Hardwood Flooring LLC utilizes direct connect vacuums with all sanding equipment.
- Plastic is hung at doorways to help contain any residual dust to the project area.
The wood floor should only be installed after the drywall/plaster is installed & finished and preferably after the walls are painted. The moisture level of the framing and sub floor will be checked, and the flooring will not be installed until moisture levels are acceptable. The permanent electrical fixtures do not have to be installed; however, suspended temporary lighting of some kind and at least one outlet in each room is required.

Yes, this is a great way to have an attachment to the land. Perhaps it is a family homestead or farm, maybe it is a tree that has come toward the end of its life, and you would like to preserve the memories of climbing on it or swinging from it as a kid. I can facilitate the cutting of the trees, cutting the logs into usable boards, a kiln to dry the lumber, and a mill to have the boards made into usable flooring.
- The clean & recoat process can take as little as one day to complete, and the floor can be walked on the next day.
Depending on the size of the floor, it may only take one day to sand. The finish process generally takes two days, no matter the size, this would include one sealer coat and two finish coats.
The time it takes is completely dependent on size and features of the floor to be installed.
- We are as accommodating as possible; however, we are generally booked ahead and advanced knowledge of potential flooring need is appreciated. We do not over book, this allows us to start and complete our jobs in an acceptable timeframe.
- Planning in advance is very important, there are many decisions to make; we offer a variety of species, widths, stain options, accent features, etc. and like to provide samples of what your floor could actually look like.
- Once decisions are made the wood needs to be ordered, we try to use locally sourced flooring so it can take a week or two to secure. Any exotic species can take some time to acquire as well.
- The flooring needs to acclimate in the space it will be installed, this may take another week or two.
- The actual process of installation, sanding and finishing depends on size and scope of the project but typically can be done within a week.
Yes. It is obviously less intrusive if the project or at least part of it can be scheduled for a time when you may be on vacation or when other living arrangements are made.
Estimates are completely free, and there is no obligation. An honest opinion will always be given as to the status of your floor, whether or not it can be saved, and if so, what should be done with it.
What to Expect When Refinishing an Existing Floor
Wood floors and stairs are all we do; therefore, you can expect a complete focus on a great final outcome. Things to Expect
- All equipment connects to dust collection systems, however since no system is completely dust free plastic is hung at doorways to contain most residual dust to the project area.
- Trim is removed if necessary (this will be addressed in the estimate if it is required at additional cost).
- Sanding will commence and will run through several grits of sandpaper with many passes being made. Not to worry, less than a credit card thickness is taken off, but working through the grits is needed in order to ensure a flat smooth surface.
- The floor is then sanded with a multidisc up through 120 grit.
- The floor, trim, and windowsills will be vacuumed.
- Plastic will be removed from doorways, and the floor will be vacuumed again along with adjacent areas to doorways.
- The first coat of polyurethane seal will be applied and allowed to dry. Or the stain will be applied, excess wiped off and allowed to dry.
- After proper dry time, the floor will be abraded to knock down the raised grains, throughly cleaned and 2 coats of finish will be applied with proper dry time in between coats.
- The next day the floor will be inspected to determine it is indeed ready to go; if an additional coat of finish is felt to be necessary, it will be done with no additional charge.

Things to Expect
- The first step is to deliver the flooring five to ten days in advance of starting the project. This step helps ensure proper acclimation to the environment the flooring will be installed in.
- When the scheduled installation time arrives, plastic will be hung in doorways to keep dust confined within the work area.
- Door jambs will be undercut to allow the flooring to slide under door trim for a nice finish. This step is sometimes skipped by some installers to save time, but skipping this step does not allow for a professional job.
- An NWFA certified vapor barrier will be installed between the subfloor and the new flooring.
- One of the most important steps in the process is to square and straight line the new flooring to the room it will be installed in.
- After the flooring is squared, straight lined, and four runs are down and rechecked for square and straightness, the installer can then move on with the big nailer. At this point, the install process will move along quickly.
- Great care is taken in placement of the flooring boards to ensure the floor is structurally sound. Also, boards that do not fit in with the whole theme of the floor, as far as color, grade, and quality are culled out.
- Thresholds will be fabricated to fit and installed as necessary.
- When finishing against a wall, the final three or four courses will not be able to be blind nailed. They are glued and top nailed, and the nail holes will be filled during the sanding process.
- At this point, the sanding and finishing process will start. The process is the same for a new install as it is for a refinish, except a new floor does not need to be sanded as aggressively.
